My dearest Kay,

This morning two very important letters arrived. One from Geoff Fell acting C.O. to say that I may go to York tomorrow morning no sorry on Saturday morning. A train leaves Malton at 8.39 arrives York 9.9 so that is the time I will meet you. The return train is 6.35 same as yours so thats not so bad either. I believe something is wrong with Mellins car so possibly it may not be available. Even if it is I will meet you at the Station at about ten past nine ‘cos you’ll need a little time to freshen up etc etc. Why am I writing all this because I hope to hear your voice tonight. I do hope it is fine because it will be a mess trapseing about in the rain.

The other letter was from your father. Very nice I’ll let you read it on Saturday. It had been wrongly sorted and had gone to Halifax. I don’t know why because the address was fairly legible. It was posted on Tuesday and would normally have got here last night instead of this morning.

Geoff Fell was nice and cheery makes me a bit suspicious. I wonder whether he thinks of stopping my Christmas leave though I must be getting so suspicious and pessimistic that I think everything is going to go the wrong way. It will be nice to see you again. Though its less than a week ago it seems ages and ages. Still I will soon be having you for seven days.

I haven’t really had time to think about Christmas time yet and can hardly realise that it is so near. It is really very near – a fortnight on Monday is Christmas day. Heavens how time flies. Just think four months ago we were scrapping at Kilconquhar. I had to pause at scrapping because your letter arrived. How the tempo of your letter quickens. It starts of quite normally and steadily makes my blood accelerate through my heart until now it is simply pounding and pounding away. I am sorry about your arm. Dont bother if its in a sling. Wear your blue. I will wear my khaki. Now I don’t keep getting on to you about taking care of yourself and you go about cracking your elbow. Get it better for Christmas cos it mustn’t interfere with us.

Now what else was there in your letter. Oh yes the dance. It would be nice if I could get over. Other units may be on leave that is units from our Bn because the Christmas leave will be spread over a month and those who’ve had it will have to wait for a bit until they can have another 48 hrs off. If I came I sould have to wear my khaki and that would be very hot.

I hope your mother will be well enough to travel with you to Leeds. Try and get her to come it will be good company for you, besides its dangerous to travel along nowadays.

Re the T’s… I thought I had given you them. Still if I haven’t I still know where they are. They can be made into a nice brooch. I will buy you a regimental brooch for your next birthday. Now shall I have it set in prescious stones like the one of Mrs Ansells. No just the plain thing I guess.

I am sure my mother is exceedingly pleased about us and I daresay she was expecting it. I suppose they have a kind of intuition. Anyway she always wanted me to marry a heiress and oh boy I’m half way. You poor child little realising that its not you but your money I’m after.

I had a letter from mother today thanking me for the York Post and she mentions about the champagne. It is a bottle we’ve had for some time and it is being saved for some special occasion orginally I think for when I got through my examination. We had better keep it to celebrate my safe return from the war I think.

It is very cold here today. White frost very heavy last night and it has stayed on all day. We were out most of the morning on the moors and managed to keep fairly warm.

The trains all get in at the same station at York I am very sure. I only know of one anyway and thats the one by that big hotel.

And now pet I’ve got to get on with my work for this confounded exam. It is written by the way. It is twenty five to six, I’ll walk up to the post with this. An hours work till dinner then work again till nine o’clock when the phone will ring. I was through in a very short time last Sunday.

Ho ho I’ve just remembered saying in this letter that it was only last week that I saw. Damn if it is a fortnight ago. I must be losing my memory.

All my love sweetheart,

Ronnie
